2024 RURAL ART EXHIBIT DAZZLES
The Rural Impressions Art Awards and Exhibition, held as a key fringe event of the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival, displayed a dazzling array of artworks amidst the action of the 2024 Street Markets and Carnival.
Organised by, and hosted for the second consecutive year at the Boyup Brook Community Resource Centre (CRC), the art exhibition attracted more than 550 visitors. They were treated to a vibrant presentation of 89 art pieces that centered around the theme of rural life. Artists from across Perth and the South West region participated in the art exhibition, but it was local, Boyup Brook artist, Janet Winter that received the top honours on opening night. Her delicate pastel piece ‘Held by the Horns’ depicted a shearer at work, and not only won first place, but was the first of fifteen pieces to sell at the exhibition. The competition winners were decided upon by renowned Western Australian art judge Carl Altmann, and his wife Jan. They were visibly wowed by the high standard of the artworks before them, stating at one point during their deliberation, “Sometimes we have to pick the best of the worst – not today.” They had a very hard time narrowing their choices to award the first, second and third place getters, as well as an Under 18 Award. Due to the high standard of works on offer, they also chose to award Highly Commended certificates to a variety of artworks. One piece in particular, stole the hearts of many by taking out both the Packer’s Prize and the People’s Choice Award. The piece was of a working dog painted onto corrugated tin, entry number 22, titled ‘What Now Boss?’ by Donnybrook artist Gwen Edwards. CRC Projects Officer Sharon Lampard attributes the success of this event to team work, “We are so lucky to have an amazing bunch of volunteers that put their time and expertise into the set up and pack up of Rural Impressions, as well as manning the display over the course of the Country Music Festival. “Thank you doesn’t feel quite enough to show how grateful we are of your time and dedication to this event, especially during such a busy time for Boyup Brook!” The CRC would also like to extend deep gratitude for the ongoing support and sponsorship that enables events like this to thrive year after year. Thank you to the Lions Club of Boyup Brook, Talison Lithium, Jacksons Drawing Supplies Bunbury, Watercolour Society of WA, P&J Broockmann and the Country Music Club of Boyup Brook. If you have any feedback or queries about Rural Impressions, or you would like to be added to the emailing list, please call the CRC on 9765 1169 or email artawards@boyupbrook.org. |
